Memorial Day

I know this is a real estate blog but overall it is a blog about me and what I am doing in my business. So, I wanted to take some time this morning, on Memorial Day, to talk about my other job and what today really means to me. I will get to the real estate stuff but you are going to have to deal with this first. Memorial Day isn’t about me as an active duty military member or any of the other veterans you can thank in person today. It’s about those who have left us way before their time that you can’t thank in person anymore.

Every Memorial Day I think back to when I was a newly commissioned Ensign in the Navy, fresh out of college and I had yet to lose anyone really close to me at this point in my life. I was a graduate student at the Air Force Institute of Technology and we were there with a group of senior pilots about to go to Test Pilot School. I will never forget what one of those LTs said to me one night when he was telling me a story about a friend that was killed in an airplane crash. He said, “you will have people in your log book who don’t make it home too.” If you don’t understand that, he was telling me that this is a dangerous job and people I fly with, who are very close to me, will lose their lives doing it. And he was right.

I don’t want to get too somber in this post but I can unfortunately count on two hands those folks who are in my log book, that I have flown with, who didn’t make it home to their families and friends. I still remember where I was and what I was doing each time I heard about one of them losing their lives. They gave the ultimate sacrifice so you and I can live in this great country of ours and enjoy our freedom. So today, on Memorial Day, please take a moment to remember those who have lost their lives fighting for what we believe in and what we stand for. It’s not about the Veterans who made it home, it’s about those who didn’t. So, if you want to thank someone today; thank a mother, a father, a wife, a husband, a son, or a daughter of one of those service members who laid down their life for their country.

After writing this, it was much harder than I thought to transition to real estate so I think I will keep it at this today.

Enjoy your day and take the time to tell someone close to you that you love them, especially if you haven’t for a while.
